Weather Station Buying Checklist and Comparison Guide

Compare systems by the records you need, the site you have, and the data you can keep.

Compare the whole system

A feature list cannot compensate for poor exposure or inaccessible data. Use this checklist before narrowing models, and confirm current specifications and compatibility directly with the manufacturer.

Buying checklist

Measurements

Prioritize rain, outdoor temperature/humidity, pressure, and wind only when you have suitable exposure. Check range, resolution, update interval, and whether sensors can be placed separately.

Records and export

Ask how much history survives an outage, whether you can download raw observations, and whether an app, cloud account, or subscription is required.

Radio and power

Test the published range against walls and distance. Review battery types, solar assistance, cold-weather performance, and replacement sensor availability.

Mounting and service

Price the mast, brackets, grounding or surge protection where appropriate, and safe access for cleaning. Verify the rain gauge can be leveled.

Support and longevity

Read the warranty, calibration instructions, firmware policy, and availability of parts. A repairable system is often the better long-term value.

Total cost

Include optional sensors, batteries, data services, and mounting equipment. Do not pay for features your property cannot site well.
